South
Cronulla.

A swim, a coffee or a catch-up by the sea. After 20-plus years here, we still think South Cronulla has something for everyone.

01 / At the heart of it

Meet you
at the beach.

For us, this is Cronulla’s meeting place.

We’ve lived here for more than 20 years, and South Cronulla keeps getting better in our eyes. It’s where a quick walk can turn into a coffee, a swim or an afternoon catching up with friends.

There’s something here for everyone. The kids have the sand and the playground. Swimmers have the beach and nearby ocean pools. If you just want to sit and watch the water, there’s grass, shade and a view you won’t tire of.

The lovely thing is how close it all is. You can step off the train, walk down through town and be looking at the sea within minutes. Shops, food and coffee are right behind you. You don’t need a big plan to have a good day here.

02 / On the sand

Choose a spot.
Settle in.

We love this beach for a proper day by the water. There’s room to spread out, go for a swim and come back to your towel with the cafés and park close by.

In our experience, this southern corner often feels more sheltered when a nasty southerly change comes through. That’s part of its appeal, though the swell and currents still decide what the swimming is like.

Swim between the red and yellow flags while patrols are operating. Check the flags and conditions on arrival, and see council’s lifeguard hours before planning your swim.

03 / A day for everyone

Sand for the kids. Shade for you.

You can spend the afternoon here without going in the water.

The park behind the beach makes South Cronulla a lovely family outing. A playground gives the little kids something of their own, and the big lawn is a place to spread a rug, have a snack and let the day slow down.

We like being able to move between the grass and the sand without packing everything up and heading somewhere else. One person can go for a swim while the others relax, then everyone comes back together for something to eat.

Bring towels, a picnic and a little time. Keep the kids close around the water, and choose a spot that suits the group. Council’s Cronulla Park page has more on the playground, paths and facilities.

04 / Beside the ocean

Another way
to take a dip.

Just north of the beach, the Cronulla ocean pools sit on the rock platform beside the Esplanade. They add another reason to bring your swimmers, even if you’re only coming down for a walk.

The larger pool suits general swimming and laps. The smaller pool changes with the tide, becoming shallow at low tide and submerged at high tide, so it may not be suitable when you visit.

See council’s beach and pool guidance and check the BOM Port Hacking tide times. The pool information page also lists maintenance closures.

05 / Stay for something to eat

Coffee first.
Lunch next.

You won’t have to go far when everyone gets hungry.

Bobby’s is right on the beachfront, with the water in front of you and the coastal walkway passing by. Its Mediterranean menu is designed for sharing, which suits an unhurried lunch with friends. Have a look at Bobby’s menu and bookings if you’d like to make it part of your day.

Barefoot on the Beach is another familiar stop for us, tucked into the pavilion just above the sand. A coffee here puts you right among the beachgoers, walkers and people meeting up before they head off along the coast.

There are more cafés, takeaway options and shops across the road and back towards the mall. That makes this an easy beach to visit without carrying a whole day’s food. Pick up what you feel like and come back to enjoy the view.

And the Cronulla RSL is right here too. A meal or a catch-up there can round out the day without taking you away from the beach.

06 / A familiar landmark

The club
by the sea.

Cronulla Surf Club is one of the buildings we immediately associate with this beach. The clock tower, pavilion and promenade give South Cronulla its familiar face.

It’s part of what makes this feel like a community as well as a place to swim. There’s always something to look at as people come and go, carry their boards down or stop to talk on the walkway.

Visit Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club for information about the club and its activities.

07 / From first light to evening

Come early.
Stay a little late.

We love seeing the mood change through the day.

South Cronulla is beautiful at sunrise. The ocean is right in front of you, and an early walk gives you time to watch the light arrive before the day gets busy. It’s one of our favourite reasons to bring a camera.

Summer evenings have their own appeal. We love the changing colours around sunset, even though the sun sets behind the town rather than out over the ocean. The beach, clouds and buildings can all catch that last light.

On a lovely summer evening, there’s a real party atmosphere for us. Friends meet, people linger over food and the promenade stays social. We’ve enjoyed this place by day and in the evening for years. Sometimes the best plan is to leave room in the day to stay longer.

08 / Keep walking

A beach day.
Or a coastal walk.

South Cronulla is a great starting point for a wander along the Esplanade. You can head north past the pools or follow the coast south and see how quickly the scenery changes.

In that southern direction, you’ll pass Blackwoods Beach, then Shelly Beach and Oak Park. Keep going for Salmon Haul and the views around Hungry Point.

You can turn around whenever you feel like it. A short stroll after lunch is lovely, and a longer walk gives you a whole collection of beaches, parks and swimming spots to come back and explore.

09 / Getting here

Off the train.
Down to the sand.

One of the easiest beach outings we know.

From Cronulla Station, we’d allow about two to five minutes to walk down to the beachfront, depending on your route and pace. The train is a big part of the appeal, especially when you’re coming for a swim and don’t want to spend your morning looking for parking.

If you drive, leave time to find a space and check the signs. We find parking close to the beach limited, particularly on a good summer day. Once you’ve arrived, though, food, shops and the water are all close together.

Toilets, showers and changing facilities make it easy to rinse off and continue with your day. For access needs, council lists wheelchair access, accessible toilets and a free beach wheelchair service. Check council’s accessibility information for arrangements and availability before visiting.

Pack swimmers, towels, sunscreen and drinking water, and bring a layer if you’re staying into the evening. Check the patrol flags for a beach swim and assess conditions separately at the unpatrolled pools.

Come down
to the beach.

Join us for a look around South Cronulla. The sand, the park, the cafés and the ocean pools are all part of why this place has stayed in our lives for more than 20 years.

Still our meeting place

More than 20 years.
Still coming back.

There are places you visit once, and places that become part of your everyday life. South Cronulla is firmly in the second group for us. We’ve watched it change, spent countless hours here and found plenty of reasons to keep coming down.

It’s the combination that makes it special. The ocean, the people, a familiar coffee stop and the freedom to turn a small outing into a whole day. After all these years, it still feels like there’s something here for everyone.
