Salmon
Haul.

We love Salmon Haul for a quiet swim at the end of the Esplanade. Bring your goggles, find a little patch of sand and enjoy the view before walking back.

Walk down.
Cool off.

A swimming stop before you turn around and head back.

If you’re walking down the Esplanade, pack your swimmers. Salmon Haul is a lovely place to stop for a dip before making your way back along the coast.

This little bay sits below the cliffs at the southern end of the Cronulla peninsula. We find it quiet and rarely crowded, with a tucked-away feel that makes it easy to stay a while.

There are views across Port Hacking to Bundeena and Royal National Park, but you don’t have to be in the water to enjoy them. Sit by the shore, take your time and have a look around.

02 / Beneath the surface

Bring the
goggles.

On a calm day, we reckon this is a lovely spot to explore the water with little kids. A snorkel or a pair of goggles gives them something else to discover.

The bay feels more sheltered than the open surf beaches. Keep the outing simple: a little swim, a look beneath the surface and time together by the water.

03 / Plan your swim

Check
the tide.

At high tide, there’s very little beach left.

Before you go, check the Port Hacking tide times on the Bureau of Meteorology website.

The tide makes a real difference here. At high tide, there isn’t much sand to settle on, so it’s worth planning your visit for a time when you’ll have some beach to use.

That matters even more if you’re bringing little kids, towels and everything else that comes with a swim. Give yourselves room to put your things down and take a break from the water.

There’s a playground, seating, picnic facilities, public toilets and a bubbler in the reserve. Bring your lunch, drinks and sunscreen if you’re making an afternoon of it.

Salmon Haul is a beautiful spot for photography. From the cliffs above, you can frame a shot with the bay and the water in the background.

We love how different it looks from up here. You can see the shape of the shoreline, the rocks beneath the surface and the colours in the water. Leave a little time for photos before you head back.
